An Indianapolis police officer fatally shot a man on Wednesday during an exchange of gunfire, according to police, who suspected the man of being involved in an earlier shooting incident. Chief Chris Bailey of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department reported that officers responded to the city’s northwest side just before noon, where they discovered a man with apparent gunshot wounds. The injured man was hospitalized and was said to be in stable condition. Police officers established a perimeter, and soon after, they observed the suspect running between two houses, Chief Bailey stated. One officer exited his patrol vehicle and pursued the suspect towards the houses. "As he approached one of the houses, he shouted 'Stop! Stop! Stop!' and encountered the suspect between the houses, resulting in an exchange of gunfire," Bailey explained during a press briefing. "The suspect was struck by gunfire, but the officer was unharmed." The man later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital. The Marion County Coroner’s Office will release his identity at a later time, Bailey confirmed. Detectives recovered a firearm at the scene of the shooting, Bailey disclosed. Based on his review of police body camera footage, Bailey indicated that it appears the suspect fired at the officer first, prompting the officer to return fire. Bailey noted that it seems the deceased suspect and the man he allegedly shot were roommates.
