Hybrid golf clubs, also known as utility or rescue clubs have been proven to be the most versatile addition to almost any golfer’s set. They are often spotted in the golf bags of tour professionals and are equally important to beginners, ladies and senior golfers. Unfortunately, hybrids are often played poorly, possibly due to the concept many club golfers have of them being mini fairway woods. Agreed, hybrids or utilities look more like a wood but that doesn’t mean we should hit up on the golf ball! In fact, the opposite is true - the tour average angle of approach (angle of attack) is descending 3.5°. That’s compression. Another factor that some amateur golfers struggle with is the shaft length of a hybrid. They are much shorter than a fairway wood, by as much as 6 inches (15cms) shorter. If a player has the mindset that they are hitting a (longer) fairway wood, then that golfer will address the golf ball from too far away and reach for the ball. This means that instead of focusing on body parts, a golfer can and should focus more on the target, the ball, the clubhead - objects which are external to the body.
