Many American tourists are stranded in a popular Mexican vacation spot following the killing of the country's most-wanted drug leader Sunday. Cindy and Robert Tinney have been enjoying their vacation in Puerto Vallarta since Feb. 5. That all came to an end Sunday, when they were told to shelter in place. "We woke up yesterday morning, and it was very strange," Robert said. "We heard a lot of explosions, loud noises. (It) was dark, and I thought, ‘Are we having a thunderstorm?’" Authorities say the death of a notorious cartel leader, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, called "El Mencho," triggered widespread violence across Mexico, including some popular vacation spots. More than 70 people have been killed in the unrest. Suspected cartel members are blocking highways and torching vehicles and buildings. "There'd just be plumes of smoke where there were new fires that were set off," Cindy said. "We could hear explosions. It was either when the gas tank went or when the tires blew," Robert said. "But the air was filled with black smoke. And the smell of burning rubber. And gunshots." The couple said it's been difficult to get information from the United States government about the situation. "I tried to call them this morning, the US Embassy in Guadalajara, and ended up getting sent through a series of, you know, ‘press one, press two, press three’. And I never actually was able to talk to anybody," Robert said. "They have a travel warning posted that's pretty generic. Shelter in place, avoid dangerous areas. If anybody's hurt or injured, call 911." Several airlines suspended flights to some Mexican cities. Cindy said it appears to her that the chaos is calming down.
