This iconic railway was originally built in 1896 and connects the valley town of Štrba to the mountain resort of Štrbské Pleso. It features a meter-gauge track. The Štrbské Pleso–Štrba rack railway currently operates using the Strub rack system. Von Roll rack system, implemented during the reconstruction in 1970 was used until 2020. The original line, which used the Riggenbach rack system, was dismantled in the 1940s after operations ceased in 1932. Stretching 4.75 km (2.95 miles) with a maximum gradient of 15%, the railway climbs an impressive 444 meters (1,457 ft). The railway underwent significant modernization in 2021, and new hybrid cogwheel trains were introduced in 2022. These versatile trains operate on both the cog railway and the adjacent Tatra Electric Railway. This railway remains a vital link and a tourist highlight in the High Tatras.
