A diss track, diss record or diss song (an abbreviation of disrespect or disparage) is a song whose primary purpose is to verbally attack someone else, usually another artist. Diss tracks are often the result of an existing, escalating feud between the two people; for example, the artists involved may be former members of a group, or artists on rival labels. The diss track as a medium of its own was popularized within the hip-hop genre, fueled by the hip-hop rivalry phenomenon (especially the East Coast–West Coast hip-hop rivalry of the mid-1990s). More recently, entertainers from outside the traditional music landscape have adopted the genre. In the course of constructing their argument, artists often include a wealth of references to past events and transgressions in their diss tracks, which listeners can dive into. Artists who are the subject of a diss track often make one of their own in response to the first. It is this back-and-forth associated with a feud that makes this type of song particularly viral. The term "sneak diss" refers to lyrics in which an artist describes or refers to an individual in a negative or derogatory manner without explicitly naming the target Competition is in hip hop’s foundational roots; and has always been a part of this amazing genre and culture. Feuds and beefs are nothing short of exciting and fun. There are plenty of “Best Diss Tracks” lists online, including our own (linked at bottom of the description), but there aren’t as many “Worst Diss Tracks” list, at least not to this degree. For criteria, we looked at the following (in descending order of importance): -The quality of the disses: did they get very personal, or were they mostly general? (This was the most important criteria for us) -The act’s performance (voice, delivery, energy) and instrumental - how an insult is phrased is arguably just as important as the diss itself -The effect that the track had on its target(s) - This can vary based on the talent, skill, and status of the target(s) -The level of the opponent(s); are they even someone worth dissing? -How does the diss track work as a song; is it enjoyable to listen to outside the context of a battle record? (This is important, but holds the least weight out of all the criteria) We didn’t factor in influence on the genre, “replay value”, and the condition(s) under which the tracks were made. We also only looked at diss records from hip hop artists, aimed at other hip hop artists. We didn’t include YouTube rapper diss tracks, and we set the limit of one track per artist to make things fair. Yeah, this video isn’t as detailed as usual, or as detailed as the “Best Diss Tracks” list. But If these artists didn’t want to put effort into their disses, why should we put any effort into this video? “Top 200 - The Best Diss Tracks of All Time”: • Top 200 - The Best Diss Tracks of All Time...
