Welsh name: Rhisga Date filmed: Wednesday the 4th of December 2024 Videos filmed at: 14:29 | 14:59 Route: Ebbw Valley Railway Between Risca & Pontyminster (RCA) and Crosskeys (CKY) Stations Crossing type: Manually Controlled Barrier crossing with CCTV (MCB-CCTV) Filming location: Darran Road, Risca (NP11 7AD) A level crossing on a bendy, hillside road in Risca: a town historically in Monmouthshire, but now within the wider Caerphilly County Borough despite being closer to Newport than Caerphilly itself. This was originally a late 2000's install - dating from Early 2008 when the line re-opened to passengers, but it has had LED wigwags and new barriers in the last few years, yet the alarms are still the same and pretty quiet. You could get away with considering this to be in the Welsh Valleys, and the location is very scenic with the road the crossing is on being on a steep climb either side. The level crossing is overall very elevated above Risca itself, and it felt like it took a while to reach from the M4 with the new blanket 20mph limits on Wales' residential streets. This is, however, a safe speed for an urban / residential area. Two lowerings feature in this video, and the level crossing lowers relatively late compared to what you'd expect - I've left the wait for the first train in lowering 1 uncut. The half-hourly services along this line are timetabled to pass each other in this area, and the second lowering featured such a double pass on the crossing, both trains even being single-car Class 153's - they still exist! This line continues up the Valleys all the way to Ebbw Vale near Bannau Brycheiniog. Being in Wales meant that I'd visited all three nations of Great Britain in 2024!
