(🇯🇵日本語👇)Sade is often thought of as all ballads—but there’s a hidden magic in the beats. Back in the ’80s, in London studios, they were actually experimenting quite a lot. #sade #jazz #Soul #aor #djmix Take “Smooth Operator,” for example. It was recorded at Power Plant Studios, and instead of the heavy, polished sound that was popular at the time, the production focused on space and subtlety. They ran a Linn (Drum machine) in parts but layered live drums on top to add a human touch. The result? Not a cold, mechanical feel, but a sticky, groovy vibe that drifts through the city night. The sax solo? They actually recorded a long take but cut it short for “coolness,” which ended up making those phrases unforgettable. Even so, you can still hear breaths and finger noises, giving a real sense of the night’s humidity. And Sade’s voice—she sang as if speaking to the air in a dimly lit room. Engineer Mike Pela kept reverb minimal, preserving that sense of distance perfectly. Here’s a fun tidbit: when Sade insisted on including this track on the album, the record company was strongly against it, saying, “You should stick to ballads.” In the end, Sade’s instinct was right—this song became a worldwide hit. When she performed it on TV, her expression was neutral, which some called “unfriendly,” but it only added to her mystique, cementing her image as the “Queen of the City.” It’s a masterpiece of subtractive beauty—urban minimalism at its finest—so it still fits effortlessly anywhere, from lounges to bars. The next evolution came with “Paradise” (1988), recorded at Compass Point Studios. Martin Ditcham’s percussion was deliberately captured with a slightly saturated NEVE 8078 (mixer), while Paul S. Denman’s bouncing bass was layered dry on top. The result? That unique dance feel—grounded yet floating. Even though it was recorded in the tropical Bahamas, it came out with a cool, urban vibe. That contrast is part of the charm. Then there’s “Nothing Can Come Between Us” (1988), which had another clever touch. Horn players from Chaka Khan’s band joined in—they played her shows by day and Sade sessions by night. Their horns don’t dominate; they sit subtly in the back, gently pushing the song forward. It’s craftsmanship in a single note. This tribute mixes all that “higher-BPM Sade” into one story. If you only know her mellow side, this is the perfect chance to discover another diamond. Ah, just a quick note at the end. Since I don’t own the copyrights to the music, I don’t earn anything no matter how many ads play. That’s why I’ve set the videos to play without ads—so you can enjoy the music comfortably. 「Nothing Can Come Between Us」(1988)ではさらに仕掛けがあって、実はChaka Khanのバンド出身のホーン隊が参加。 次のセットを楽しみにしてくれる人いたら、僕への応援にビールごちそうしてね🍻😎 https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/djpap... https://buymeacoffee.com/papawantee ▫️Track List Paradise 0:08 - 4:00 Nothing Can Come Between Us 4:00 - 8:11 Hang On to Your Love (Long Version) 8:10 - 13:59 Smooth Operator 13:57 - 18:52 I Will Be Your Friend 18:52 - 23:34 Never as Good as the First Time 23:32 - 28:26 I Couldn't Love You More 28:25 - 32:11 Kiss of Life 32:10 - 37:59 Cherry Pie 37:56 - 44:08 Maureen 44:06 - 48:22 Keep Looking 48:21 - 53:35 Siempre Hay Esperanza 53:35 - 58:36 Mermaid 58:35 - 1:02:48 Disclaimer: I do not own the copyrights to the music played in this DJ set.
