Long Thanh International Airport is an airport development project which is planned to alleviate traffic congestion at Ho Chi Minh City Tan Son Nhat Airport. In the first phase, a 4000m long runway, taxiways and aprons will be developed to exceed its capacity of 25 million passengers per annum and 1.2 million tonnes of cargo per annum by 2025. In the second, Airports Corporation of Vietnam will develop the second runway and expand the passenger terminal to raise capacity to 50 million passengers and 1.5 million tonnes of cargo per annum. Then in the final phase, the USD16 billion (total) project is designed to have a capacity for 100 million passengers and five million tonnes of cargo per annum by 2050. The proposed airport is to be located 40km northeast of Ho Chi Minh City Tan Son Nhat Airport. Long Thanh International Airport is a new airport currently under construction in the Dong Nai Province of Vietnam, approximately 40 kilometers east of Ho Chi Minh City. It is expected to become one of the busiest airports in Southeast Asia upon its completion. The construction of Long Thanh International Airport began in January 2021, and it is expected to be completed in 2025. The project is estimated to cost around $16 billion and is being built in three phases. Construction of the 28,500 resident Loc An - Binh Son resettlement area began in April 2020, and by December 2020, mine clearance of the airport site started. As of January 2021, soldiers have found several unexploded mortar shells at the site. On March 30, 2022, construction of the terminal building started.
