The Mysterious Ancient Cave City Built by Hand Tools

Part 1: Vardzia is a massive 12th-century cave city and monastery complex carved into the slopes of Mount Erusheti in southern Georgia. Built entirely by hand tools, this subterranean fortress is known as a masterpiece of the Georgian Golden Age. It was primarily constructed during the reign of Queen Tamar (r. 1184–1213) as a secret sanctuary to protect her people from invading Mongol forces. Originally, the city was completely hidden inside the mountain, with only two secret entrances near the Mtkvari River. It consisted of approximately 6,000 rooms spread across 13 to 19 tiers.
