Testing out age verification technology ahead of Australia's under-16 social media ban

Every Australian on social media will need to prove their age when the ban for under-16s rolls around in December, and it might be complicated and time consuming. The official trial of age assurance technology found that facial age estimation tests took an average of 40 seconds – but it also took some users between 10 minutes and an hour. That’s before taking into account whether their age was guessed correctly. The trial report acknowledged there will be errors, especially for users closer to 16-years-old.
