The superficial sensory system includes touch, pain, and temperature perception transmitted via the spinothalamic tract and it plays a crucial role in protective reflexes and localization of lesions. What’s particularly interesting is that superficial sensations cross the spinal cord almost immediately after entering, then ascend contralaterally via the anterolateral (spinothalamic) pathway. This creates a key clinical pattern:In a spinal cord hemisection (Brown-Séquard syndrome), patients lose pain and temperature contralateral to the lesion and motor and deep touch ipsilateral—a striking, highly localizing sign.
