Ancient Middle Eastern Literature | A Selection of Laws from the Code of Shulgi

Shulgi (2094-2047 B.C.) ruled during the Third Dynasty of Ur. His code of laws were previously attributed to Ur-Nammu (2112-2095 B.C.) and were discovered at Ur during the 1922-1934 excavations by the British Museum and the University of Pennsylvania directed by C. Leonard Wooley (1880-1960). The tablets now rest in the British Museum. The Code of Shulgi is the oldest known code of laws and it established a legal tradition that applies uniform principles of justice to a variety of social and criminal cases.
