A special Powley Day message from MNO President Margaret Froh On September 19, we celebrate Powley Day and honour the sacrifices made by Steve Powley and his family in a historic ‘hunt for justice’. This year is especially significant as it marks the 20th anniversary Supreme Court of Canada's unanimous judgment in R. v. Powley. On September 19, 2003, the Supreme Court of Canada, in a unanimous judgment, recognized that the Powleys, as members of the Sault Ste. Marie Métis community, can exercise a Métis right to hunt that is protected by Section 35 of the Constitution. The Powley case was—and remains—the only high court decision that has confirmed the existence of a rights-bearing Métis community in Canada. This defining moment in Métis history established an important legal precedent in modern Indigenous law. Today, twenty years after this historic Supreme Court victory, the MNO continues to seek a renewed and collaborative relationship between Métis and Canadian governments, built on mutual respect and a shared desire for rights recognition and reconciliation.
