*THIS IS NOT REAL, THIS WAS SIMPLY MADE AS A TRIBUTE TO X* Official audio for "Timeless" with Playboi Carti, available everywhere now: theweeknd.co/Timeless Pre order The Weeknd’s upcoming album ‘Hurry Up Tomorrow’: theweeknd.co/HurryUpTomorrow The two artists had never collaborated on a song previously, however during an over 3-hour interview in January 2018 with Jamaican-American podcaster, internet personality and live streamer DJ Akademiks, X stated that “I’d cry if The Weeknd called me to do a song with me, and I’d say yeah”. He then claimed, “But I’ve been tried to reach out. Bro don’t fuck with me because of Drake. That’s what I heard.”, referencing to an ongoing beef he had at the time with the Canadian rapper, singer, and actor. X would be nearly fatally shot on June 18th of that same year. He would go on to recover and release his album “SKINS” (2019) later that year, however he would end up going to prison for a year. Before going to jail, X had reached out to The Weeknd to collaborate on “difference (interlude)” for the SKINS album. While The Weeknd tweeted “?” in reference to X’s “?” album (2018), co-signing the rapper and dismissing the Drake beef, with both of their teams agreeing to the collaboration, it never came to fruition due to X being turned in to prison. After getting out on bail on a $10,000 bond from the help of American rapper Kanye West in 2020, he would finish his fourth studio album Bad Vibes Forever (2021). Before the release, X made a second attempt to collaborate with The Weeknd by reaching out to his team about collaborating on either two tracks; “School Globes” or “Kill My Vibe”. Both never came to fruition due to scheduling conflicts as The Weeknd was finishing his album After Hours (2020), an album that notably had no collaborations. X and the Weeknd were rumored to have a remix for either “Starboy” or “Secrets” for the deluxe version of “Starboy” (2016). On August 26, 2024, X & Carti posted a photo of them on a Group FaceTime with the Weeknd on both of their Instagram stories, hinting at a possible collaboration. On September 7, The Weeknd brought out Carti for his "one night only" concert in São Paulo to perform a live debut of "Timeless", a cover of "Fein" (2023) by Travis Scott and Carti, as well as the Weeknd's "Until I Bleed Out" (2020). The concert was followed up by the release of the single "Dancing in the Flames". X was unable to attend the concert as he’s unable to attend certain countries outside of the US to his criminal record. He performed his verse via pre-recorded video screens. On November 6, the Weeknd shared a social media post with a screenshot from the music video. He simultaneously confirmed the song to be released on November 8. XXXTentacion would reveal in an audio interview with Zane Lowe from Apple Music that the song initially was just he and The Weeknd, until the latter artist suggested they add Playboi Carti to the track. X loved the idea and agreed, however he then suggested that the version with Carti serve as the second version. The Weeknd ultimately agreed, given that he had already worked with Carti for the single “Popular” with Madonna the previous year, as well as knowing how much the collaboration meant to X.
