The Peninsular War (1808–1814) was one of the most brutal and decisive conflicts of the Napoleonic Wars, fought across the Iberian Peninsula in modern-day Spain and Portugal. What began as a French invasion quickly turned into a prolonged war of resistance that drained Napoleon’s empire. French forces faced a deadly combination of British-led armies under the Duke of Wellington and relentless Spanish and Portuguese guerrilla fighters. Towns rose in rebellion, supply lines were constantly attacked, and French troops were worn down by an enemy that refused to surrender. Presented by War Lens History, this video explores how guerrilla warfare, coalition strategy, and local resistance turned Iberia into what Napoleon himself called “the Spanish Ulcer”—a conflict that helped pave the way for his eventual downfall.
