Continuing our tour of the history of the Book of Common Prayer, from the 1549 and 1559 books (previous video) to the 1662 prayer book. The Prayer Book of 1662, of the Church of England is, in many ways, the King James Version of prayer books. It's the gold standard by which all other prayer books are measured. Created in the 17th century, it remains the only prayer book authorized for use in the Church of England. And it is a wonderful display of beautiful, enduring English language and a powerful and lasting liturgy. Here we'll look at three editions of this magnificent book, from my own prayer book collection. First is the Cambridge standard edition. Next is a lavishly illustrated Henry Holt edition. And lastly, the new 1662 "International Edition" of the Book of Common Prayer, published by Intervarsity Press.
