The blizzard has paralyzed transportation in Northern California. Interstate 80 (I-80), the primary route connecting Sacramento to Reno, was completely closed in both directions over the Donner Summit due to multiple vehicle spinouts, jackknifed big rigs, and near-zero visibility. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) in Truckee advised that all travel in the Sierra is unsafe. "Should I stay or should I go? You should probably stay..." the CHP stated in a social media post, emphasizing the severe danger. The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and the California Highway Patrol (CHP) announced a, “complete traffic hold” on one of the busiest thoroughfares in the Western U.S. Due to high winds, whiteout visibility, and feet of accumulating snow, I-80 was closed from Colfax to the Nevada state line, trapping travelers and halting commercial traffic on one of the most critical transportation arteries between California and Nevada. The UC Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Lab, located near Donner Pass, reported that the storm dropped over 28 inches (71.5 cm) of snow in a single 24-hour period between Monday and Tuesday morning. Numerous spinouts and jackknifed big rigs were reported throughout the morning, forcing the CHP to halt all traffic at the Colfax and Nevada state line checkpoints. Nevada County reported nearly 10,000 residents without power on Tuesday, while Placer and El Dorado counties reported over 3,300 and 5,700 outages, respectively. While the north faced a blizzard, Southern California was battered by heavy rain and high winds. Flash flood warnings were issued for Los Angeles County as rain inundated the region. The storm pummeling the Bay Area has already unleashed pouring rain, more than 500 lightning strikes, snowy peaks and reports of hail. The Washoe County School District again closed its schools on Wednesday, citing hazardous conditions amid a storm that left mountain passes closed and as much as eight inches of snow on valley floors.Multiple other districts in the region made the announcement schools would be closed again on Tuesday night including Carson City and Story County school districts. The University of Nevada, Reno and Truckee Meadows Community College both announced Wednesday morning their campuses would remain closed. Both would resume online courses. The six backcountry skiers rescued after being caught in a Donner Pass avalanche are now safely off the mountain, Nevada County Sheriff's office said Tuesday night. Sheriff's officials say two of them are being treated at a hospital. First responders originally said 16 people were on the trip, but now say only 15 were there. The Sheriff's Office says nine people are missing as of Tuesday night. Search crews are hoping to fly aircraft Wednesday to search for those last nine people. Rescue crews on skis and snowcats battled blizzard conditions in an effort to reach the six backcountry skiers still alive but trapped Tuesday after the avalanche that left nine other skiers missing. In the nearby town of Soda Springs, at least 30 inches (76 centimeters) of snow had fallen in the last 24 hours, according to the Soda Springs Mountain Resort. #snowstorm #blizzard #snow #storm
