In this video I show you how to clone/propagate trees by air layering them. The tree used in this video is a Ginkgo Biloba. Air layering is a method of plant and tree propagation that, unlike cuttings you can propagate larger thicker branches. This method can be applied to a wide range of species for creating Bonsai faster than growing from seeds or cuttings. The advantage of air layering is, the tree you air layer will be genetically identical to the parent plant just like a cutting! How does air layering work? By removing the phloem and cambium layers under the bark by scraping it, this interrupts the flow of sugars and photosynthates to the roots. They are stopped at the wound in the phloem layer and accumulate there. This pile-up stimulates adventitious buds in the area of the wound to start growing and the presence of rooting hormone and a moist medium encourage the buds to develop roots instead of leaves. Depending on the species you air layer, the time it takes to air layer may vary. This ginkgo should have rooted in as little as 4 weeks! There will be a part 2 coming soon!
