Swanee River 1939 - Swanee River (1939) is a biographical musical drama directed by Sidney Lanfield, starring Don Ameche as Stephen Foster, a Pittsburgh songwriter who falls in love with the South and marries a Southern girl (Andrea Leeds). Accused of sympathizing with the South during the Civil War, Foster struggles with personal and professional challenges, including heavy drinking. The film, more fictional than factual, features Al Jolson as minstrel singer E.P. Christy, performing Foster’s iconic songs like “Oh! Susanna” and “Old Folks at Home.” Shot in Technicolor, it captures the era’s minstrel show. Al Jolson often portrayed himself as a Black actor with black face-paint. This was a protest to gain more Black Representaion in Movies and music. Al Jolson was a regular presence in the black community for fought for equal rights.
