Comfortable Discomfort | While We Wait | TEDxHeritageGreen

This multi-medium work of art was born in the Greenville, SC-based TEDxHeritageGreen 2021 Artists Project, during which unlikely collaborators were thrown together and challenged to CREATE. With only five weeks and the springboard phrase “comfortable discomfort,” the artists delivered an impactful, emotional piece. The video debuted during TEDxHeritageGreen 2021: TRUTH, held in three short virtual sessions on April 23, 25, and 27. ARTIST COLLABORATORS: Vaughn D. ARTISTIC STATEMENT: As artists, we all face similar challenges. The nature of art is cyclical—we start a work, live with it intensely for a period, release it to the scrutiny of the public, and then start all over with the next project—while encountering a host of emotions like fear, doubt, depression, confidence, joy, and the satisfaction of accomplishment. In “Comfortable Discomfort,” we illustrate that cycle through music, dance and film. We believe these challenges are not unique to artists; in fact, they are common to everyone. We can each be comforted in the knowledge that, no matter where we are in this cycle, there are others working through it, too—and, despite an air of comfort, are experiencing extremes of discomfort alongside us. GROUP BIO: While We Wait is a collaborative of three Upstate SC artists. • Choreographer/dancer Vaughn D. Newman, Jr., is the artistic director of the Vaughn Newman Dance company. He has offered professional dance instruction out of The Studio since 2018, and sponsors multiple arts outreach programs designed to narrow cultural divides. • Filmmaker Collins Abbott White learned his craft shooting with Bell and Howells, NPRs and Arri film cameras while cutting film stock on a bench—an education that informs his current process and aesthetic. He runs Other Vision Studios, produces and directs short films, and partners with other filmmakers to bring dreams to life. • Jazz composer/musician Tom Wright paints aural scenes through projects such as his album “Notes From The Journey,” compositions within a Greenville Jazz Collective album, and the Wheel Sessions underground concerts. He is an unofficial composer-in-residence for the Greenville Jazz Collective and directs the Spartanburg Jazz Ensemble. » This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
