The Terracotta army: Guarding the Tomb of China's First Emperor 兵马俑

The Terracotta Army is one of the most extraordinary archaeological discoveries of the 20th century! Discovered in 1974 by local farmers digging a well, this vast underground army was created to guard the tomb of Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor to unify China more than 2,200 years ago. Archaeologists estimate there are around 8,000 life-size clay soldiers, along with horses and chariots, each with unique facial features and details—likely modeled after real soldiers from the emperor’s army. While parts of the site are open to visitors today, the emperor’s actual tomb remains nearby and unopened due to preservation and health concerns.
