My Wife Loved Another Man | Learn English Through Story Level 1 | Graded Reader ------- I sit on the front porch of our small house. The air is hot and thick. It is hard to breathe. The old ceiling fan turns slowly above me. It makes a soft sound with each turn. The orange light of late afternoon falls across the wooden floor. The boards are old and gray. Some have cracks. Nick always says he will fix them. But he never does. I wait for my husband Nick. He works at the hardware store in town. He sells tools and paints and nails. He knows about fixing things. Every day he comes home at six. We eat dinner together. We talk about our day. Simple talk. Good talk. But today it is already seven. The sun is still high in the sky. Summer days are long here. My phone makes a sound. I picked it up from the small table next to me. Nick sends a message. "Working late today. A big delivery came. Sorry." I put the phone down. I drink my water. The glass is wet on the outside. Cold water in hot air makes this happen. I learned this in school long ago. I look around the porch. My eyes stop at the shelf near the door. There is an old book there. Brown leather cover. Very old. A piece of paper sticks out from between the pages. I stand up. My legs are stiff from sitting. I walk to the shelf. I take the book. It is dusty. I open it where the paper is. The paper falls out. It lands on the floor. I picked it up. There is one word written on it. "Iris." Who is Iris? I do not know this name. Nick never talks about Iris. Is she a friend? Someone from work? The writing is not Nick's. It is small and neat. A woman's writing maybe. I put the paper back in the book. I closed the book. I put it back on the shelf. The fan continues to turn. Round and round. Small bugs make sounds in the trees. Summer bugs. They sing their summer song. I sit down again in my chair. I will not ask Nick about this now. I will wait. I need to think first. \ ------- 📚 Welcome to Kavico English Storytime!
