(30 Apr 1996) Natural Sound A man hoping to negotiate an end to the month-long standoff at the Freemen's compound in Montana says he is frustrated both with government agents and the media. James "Bo" Gritz has been talking to the anti-government group which has been holed up on the ranch since the end of March. But now Gritz says he has been misrepresented by the media and that F-B-I agents performed an unusually thorough body search after his meeting Sunday. For the third day, James "Bo" Gritz, a leading member of the so-called "Patriot" movement, went to the sprawling compound that the Freemen call home. Accompanying him was Jack McLamb, a retired police officer and founder of a group called "Police Against the New World Order." Gritz had briefed reporters on his two previous meetings with the Freemen, whom he described as well-armed but possibly low on food. This time, however, there would be no press conference - Gritz says he's frustrated with the way the media are portraying him. He refused to stop as he passed the media encampment around the perimeter of the Freemen compound. Gritz and McLamb are the second group to be involved in negotiations with the Freemen. The first was a party of local lawmakers and other state officials, but talks went nowhere. An estimated 18 to 20 people still live in the compound. Several have surrendered since the standoff began March 25. The F-B-I has remained tight-lipped about the standoff, referring reporters to the U-S Attorney's office.
