"Suicide Room" (2011) (Movie Review with Spoilers)

“Suicide Room” is a 2011 Polish film, its original title is “Sala Samobójców” in Polish and is sometimes presented as “@SuicideRoom” in English. The film was directed by Jan Komasa and stars Jakub Gierszal, Roma Gąsiorowska, Agata Kulesza and Kryzysztof Pieczyński. This unforgettable film follows the story of Dominik, a seemingly “normal” upper class student whose life completely changes for the worse after a classmate named Aleks publishes an embarrassing encounter between the two during Judo practice. This happens soon after a video of him and Aleks kissing on prom night goes viral which only feeds to the fire of cyber-bullying that he is to receive. A furious and desperate Dominik starts chatting with an online user who invites him to an cyber-world called “The Suicide Room”, this users’ name is Sylwia (or Sylvia) who seems to understand his sensitivity to this “contaminated world” better than anyone else, slowly, Dominks’ real life seems to fade into the darkness thanks to his parents’ absence and the humiliation of his peers as well as his inability to cope and/or try and communicate his feelings with anyone, with the exception of his newly found family in The Suicide Room. As the name suggests, it is only a matter of time before the end of his life if these clearly unresolved traumas and problems continue to be left unattended. Set in a cold yet engaging atmosphere, “Suicide Room” brings forth a rarely (if ever) seen duality of the two worlds we currently live in as humans, the real world and the cyber world. It does so effectively, all while carrying a series of significant themes and morals such as: parents’ absence, cyber-bullying, homophobia, social hypocrisy, etc. The visuals are beautiful, especially the animations as seen from Dominik’s perspective as a human and as an avatar. As mentioned in my video review, no matter what the circumstances are, there is always hope and we can try to give ourselves the opportunity to live another day and try and make the wrong things right, the pain less severe and our love more indestructible. #suicideroom #salasamobójców My personal rating for this movie is: 10/10 Thanks for watching!
