AEMO head shuts down Chris Bowen’s ‘explicit guarantee’ of lower power prices

Sky News Political Contributor Chris Uhlmann slams the AEMO which announced it was unable to promise lower electricity prices despite Energy Minister Chris Bowen’s “explicit guarantee” the government could. Australian Energy Market Operator head Daniel Westerman has said he cannot guarantee the current government policies will deliver lower power prices. “He is developing the government’s integrated system plan – so this is the plan for 82 per cent renewables by 2030,” Mr Uhlmann told Sky News Australia. “What he’s just said is that he cannot guarantee the price of electricity is going to fall.” Mr Uhlmann said this was despite the “explicit guarantee” from Mr Bowen promising power bills would decrease. “It was obvious … that putting more renewables on the grid was never going to cut the wholesale price of electricity because it’s the highest cost of generation that sets the market price,” he said.
