Gangaramaya Temple Located on the banks of Beira Lake, the Gangaramaya Temple is one of Colombo’s most iconic and multi-faceted Buddhist landmarks. It functions as a place of worship, a center for vocational training, and a museum housing an eclectic collection of artifacts. Founded in the late 19th century by the scholar-monk Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Thera, the temple was instrumental in the Buddhist revival movement in Sri Lanka. It has since evolved into an international institute for learning and community service. Timings: Open daily from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Dress Code: Visitors must dress conservatively; shoulders and knees must be covered (no shorts or sleeveless tops). Shoes and hats must be removed before entering. Independence Square Located in the upscale Cinnamon Gardens (Colombo 07), Independence Square is a major national monument commemorating Sri Lanka's liberation from British rule on February 4, 1948. It is one of the city's most popular public spaces for both historical exploration and recreation. Independence Memorial Hall Architecture: The centerpiece is an open-sided pavilion inspired by the Magul Maduwa (Royal Audience Hall) of the Kingdom of Kandy. It features 60 stone lions—symbolising Sinhalese kings—and intricate pillars decorated with traditional floral and religious motifs. National Hero Statue: Standing at the front is a statue of Rt. Hon. Don Stephen Senanayake, known as the "Father of the Nation" and Sri Lanka's first Prime Minister. Marine Drive, Colombo Running parallel to the western coast of Sri Lanka, Marine Drive (officially part of the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Road) is a scenic coastal highway and promenade that stretches from Kollupitiya to Dehiwala. It offers a continuous view of the Indian Ocean and is a popular alternative to the busy Galle Road. Timings: Accessible 24 hours daily, though it is liveliest between 5:00 PM and 10:00 PM. Entrance Fee: Free of charge. It is a public road and promenade. Best Time to Visit: 5:30 PM to catch the sunset over the Indian Ocean. Mornings (5:00 AM – 8:00 AM) are also popular for exercise. Colombo Port City (PCC) Colombo Port City (PCC) is a 269-hectare reclaimed master-planned city and a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) designed as South Asia’s premier hub for finance, technology, and lifestyle. As of early 2026, it has transitioned from a reclamation project to a functioning urban destination with several key attractions now open to the public. Colombo Lotus Tower The Colombo Lotus Tower (Nelum Kuluna) is South Asia's tallest self-supported structure, standing at 350 metres (1,150 ft). It serves as a telecommunications hub, a luxury leisure destination, and the most recognizable silhouette of the Colombo skyline. Architecture & Symbolism Design: Inspired by the lotus flower, which symbolizes purity in Sri Lankan culture. The "petals" are made of glass and steel, illuminated at night by an intelligent LED system that changes colors for various festivals and holidays. Technology: It houses antennas for over 50 TV and radio broadcasters and provides 5G coverage across the city center. Negombo Beach Negombo Beach is a long, golden-sand stretch on Sri Lanka's west coast, famous for its vibrant fishing culture and its status as the closest beach resort to Bandaranaike International Airport (about 15–20 minutes away). Often called "Little Rome" due to its large Catholic community and ornate churches, it serves as a popular first or last stop for travelers. Vibe: It is a bustling "working beach" rather than a secluded paradise. Sunsets: Known for spectacular purple and golden sunsets, which are a highlight for visitors.
