A. The Mighty Diamonds - Bodyguard B. The Mighty Diamonds - One Brother Short Label: Front Line - FLS 12212 This Double 12" Spin dives back into the '70s! Enjoy roots reggae harmonies with The Mighty Diamonds. Plus, we have a unique combination: the soulful voice of Brent Dowe meets the toasting of Jah Walton. Pure Jamaican classics! The first 12-inch platter highlights the legendary Mighty Diamonds, a vocal trio formed in 1969 by Donald 'Tabby' Shaw, Fitzroy 'Bunny' Simpson, and Lloyd 'Judge' Ferguson. In their early years, they recorded with a variety of producers, including Pat Francis, Stranger Cole, Derrick Harriott, Bunny Lee, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, and Rupie Edwards. However, their major breakthrough came in the mid-1970s with producer Joseph Hoo Kim at Channel One, where they released hits like 'Country Living,' 'Hey Girl,' and the timeless 'Right Time.' The success of these singles culminated in the release of their debut album, 'Right Time' (1976), catapulting them to international acclaim. In the early 1980s, the group began working with Gussie Clarke, during which they released one of their most iconic songs, 'Pass the Kouchie,' penned by Ferguson and Simpson. Throughout the decades, The Mighty Diamonds remained prolific, consistently releasing albums and smoothly transitioning into the digital era without losing their distinctive vocal harmonies. They also maintained a strong global presence through extensive touring. Sadly, 2022 brought devastating news: lead singer Tabby was fatally shot, and just a day later, Bunny passed away in a Kingston hospital. A. Brent Dowe & Jah Walton - Girl I've Got A Date B. Brent Dowe - In Medley Label: Sky Note - SKY DD007 Brent Dowe was a pivotal figure in Jamaican music, best known as the lead singer of the iconic vocal trio The Melodians. With his smooth, soulful tone and expressive phrasing, Dowe played a key role in shaping the sound of the rocksteady and early reggae eras. In 1962, he joined forces with Tony Brevett and Trevor McNaughton to form The Melodians—a group celebrated for their rich harmonies and polished stage performances, drawing inspiration from American soul groups like The Temptations. The Melodians collaborated with some of Jamaica’s most influential producers, including Prince Buster, Duke Reid, Coxsone Dodd, and Sonia Pottinger. Their most notable success, however, came through their work with Leslie Kong at Beverley’s Records. Alongside his contributions to the group, Dowe also pursued solo projects, recording for the likes of Sonia Pottinger, Niney the Observer, and Lee "Scratch" Perry. While his musical output slowed during the 1980s, his legacy remained intact. Brent Dowe passed away from a heart attack on January 29, 2006, at the age of 59. After a short spell in the Jamaican police force, Silbert Walton launched his music career in 1976 under the name Jah Walton, working with renowned producer Joe Gibbs. He went on to collaborate with Harry Mudie, with whom he recorded his debut album, 'Touch Her Where She Want It Most.' Additional sessions followed at Sonia Pottinger's High Note label. By 1982, Jah Walton had earned growing recognition thanks to several hit singles. In the mid-1980s, he rebranded himself as Joseph Cotton, marking the beginning of a new phase in his career. His popularity soared in 1987 with the UK smash hit 'No Touch The Style,' released by Fashion Records. Cotton continued to perform and record well into the 1990s, 2000s, and beyond. His journey saw collaborations with respected figures such as Glen Brown, Errol Dunkley, and singer Sylvie Tella. In 1998, the German label Moll-Selekta celebrated his early work by issuing 'Dancehall Days 1976–1984', a compilation that revisited his recordings as Jah Walton.
