Dickinson College (Carlisle, Pa.) will host Joshua Tucker, co-director of the Center for Social Media and Politics, to present his research on scientific interventions to mitigate the negative effects of social media. The program, “Combating Online Harms: The Importance of Rigorous Scientific Testing of Proposed Interventions,” will take place on Tuesday, March 17, at 7 p.m. in the Anita Tuvin Schlechter Auditorium (ATS). The event is free and open to the public. Drawing from his work on the U.S. 2020 Facebook & Instagram Election Study, Tucker will review the evolving issues that social media poses for American democracy and will challenge conventional wisdom about online interventions. He will unpack the fallacies underlying advice to “do your own research” online and will highlight common misunderstandings about source credibility. Tucker will also provide insight into the measurable effects of social media on U.S. politics, exploring many of the ideas in “Social Media and Democracy: The State of the Field,” a 2020 volume he co-edited. Tucker is internationally recognized for his research on political behavior. He is the director of the Jordan Center for the Advanced Study of Russia and the co-director of the Center for Social Media and Politics at New York University (NYU). At NYU, Tucker is a Julius Silver, Roslyn S. Silver, and Enid Silver Winslow Professor as well as a professor of politics. Additionally, Tucker co-chairs the American Political Science Association’s Presidential Task Force on AI and Politics. This lecture is part of the Bruce R. Andrews Lecture Series in political science, which commemorates its namesake, a beloved and influential professor of political science at Dickinson who passed away in 2008. The Bruce R. Andrews Fund continues political debate and discussion in his memory. This program is co-sponsored by the Clarke Forum for Contemporary Issues and the Bruce R. Andrews Fund as well as Dickinson’s departments of political science, data analytics, English and mathematics & computer science. For additional information, please visit clarkeforum.org
