When the Japanese launched their offensive through Asian Pacific, Australia were sent Spitfire squadrons to help defend the country. They were primarily based in the Northern Territory and used for defending Darwin against Japanese air raids. One on one with a Japenese Zero, the Spitfires were evenly matched -- able to fly up to an altitude of 45,000 feet to catch up to (and shoot down) the Japanese reconnaissance planes. This was the very last Spitfire MK 8 delivered to the RAAF in 1945. It was painted in the colors of Wing Commander Bobby Gibbes - 457 Squadron RAAF, which was known as the Grey Nurse Squadron. As a Wing Commander, it has his initials RJ ‘Robert Gibbes’, and a V for victory. It never saw operational service and spent the next 40 years between technical colleges and storage, before being restored and returned to flight in 1985, then came to the museum in the year 2000.
