#lalbagh #flowershow #lalbaghflowershow The Lalbagh Flower Show began in the late 19th century as small displays, evolving into a major bi-annual event (Summer & Winter) from 1912, inspired by England's Chelsea Flower Show and formalized by G.H. Krumbiegel and the Mysore Horticultural Society. Held twice yearly, it features elaborate themes celebrating national events like Republic/Independence Day, showcasing vast floral arrangements in the iconic Glass House and becoming a beloved Bengaluru cultural heritage. Early Beginnings & Inspiration (19th Century) Mughal Roots: Lalbagh itself started in the 1760s as a private garden for Hyder Ali, later developed by Tipu Sultan. Humble Shows: Small flower shows began in the 1860s/1870s, often staged at the bandstand. John Cameron's Contribution: The construction of the Glass House (modeled after London's Crystal Palace) by superintendent John Cameron in 1889 provided a grand venue. Formalization & Growth (Early 20th Century) Krumbiegel's Vision: In 1912, botanist G.H. Krumbiegel, inspired by the Royal Horticultural Society's shows, established the Mysore Horticultural Society and made the flower show a regular, grand event. Bi-Annual Tradition: The Summer and Winter shows became fixed fixtures, showcasing exotic and native blooms. Cultural Phenomenon (Mid-20th Century Onwards) National Events: Since 1951, shows have marked Republic Day and Independence Day with patriotic themes. Themed Displays: The shows feature intricate floral replicas and tributes to historical figures, leaders (like Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Krishnaraja Wadiyar), and cultural icons (like actor Rajkumar). Resilience: Despite few interruptions (like the plague or COVID-19), the tradition continues as a major cultural attraction. Key Figures Hyder Ali & Tipu Sultan: Founders of the garden. John Cameron: Built the Glass House. G.H. Krumbiegel: Formalized the bi-annual shows.
