Food Forests - Using a mature forest matrix as a model we design and implement perennial food systems in suburban settings. Once established there is no need for supplemental irrigation or fertilization. Islands of Refugia - Intensive agricultural systems fragment existing natural systems and the functions they provide. This fragmentation creates an increase in pest populations and thus an increase in maintenance. This can lead to low agricultural yields, increased operations cost and an increase in the use of pesticides. Islands of Refugia provide habitat for beneficial insects, birds and micro-organisms which will increase yields and eliminate the need for pesticides.
