#possibility #probability #englishvocabulary What is the difference between possibility and probability? Consider this sentence: There is a possibility that it may rain in the afternoon and if it rains, there is a great probability that you will get wet if you don’t take an umbrella. A possibility is about what can happen. It can rain. It can be sunny. It can be cloudy without rain. The Earth can be hit by a big meteor that can cause global extinction. It’s a possibility. Probability is the likelihood of something happening. Probability is mathematical. Suppose a big meteor that can cause extinction enters Earth’s orbit every 50 million years. For simplification, you can say that the probability of a big meteor hitting Earth is one in 50 million years. If two big meteors enter Earth’s orbit every 50 million years, the previous probability doubles. Now the probability of an extinction-causing meteor hitting Earth is 2 in 50 million years. Similarly, if on an average 10 big meteors enter Earth’s orbit every 50 million years, you know what the probability of a massive meteor hitting Earth is now: 10 in 50 million years. Possibility doesn’t depend on numbers. There is always a possibility of something happening even if it has never happened before. For example, a solar flare has never destroyed life on Earth. But there is always a possibility that a huge solar flare can cause massive destruction on earth. Scientists know that there is a possibility of such a solar flare. But they don’t know the probability because they don’t have past date. Therefore, Possibility: something can happen. Probability: how sure we are that it is going to happen. When you are very confident of something happening, you say that there is a probability that it is going to happen. Probability is used when matters are serious, and you need to take a critical decision based on the probability. When America invaded Iraq, the CIA said that there was an 80% probability that Iraq had built a stockpile of weapons of mass destruction. America couldn’t have invaded Iraq based on a possibility. When you know something can happen but you’re not quite sure, you say that there is a possibility that it is going to happen. When writing sentences, when you’re confident, use probability, when you’re not so confident, use possibility. What about impossible and improbable? The same logic applies. It is impossible for a person to come alive when he has died, and he has been cremated. It is improbable for a person to come alive after he has been dead for five minutes, although not impossible. So, in the case of impossible, something can be completely ruled out. In the case of improbable, although it is difficult for something to happen, it cannot be ruled out.
