I visit Ripon Cathedral in Yorkshire, the church built by St. Wilfrid and containing the crypt that he built, the oldest part of any cathedral in Britain dating from 672AD. Wilfrid, who travelled from his native Northumbria to Rome in the 650s, was a dedicated pilgrim and he knew the importance of pilgrimage to believers. He also realised that many common people would never have the chance to journey to Rome or Jerusalem so he built a replica of Christ's tomb under his new church in Ripon.
