In this lecture, Fromm discusses the concept of the Oedipus Complex and what he defines as its essential problem. He talks about Sigmund Freud’s stance on mental health and its connection to the Oedipus Complex. Freud believed that one’s ability to overcome their Oedipus Complex would result in their attainment of independence, and that their failure to do so would result in remaining dependencies on their mother or father, thus creating problems into adulthood. Fromm also discusses the related concepts of separation anxiety, the different degrees of dependencies, the various levels of individuation, and how the perceptions of these concepts are all impacted by the societal structure in which one resides.
