Céad míle fáilte, once again! Welcome to Millstreet, in County Cork, Ireland, for my Top 10 list for Eurovision 1993. This year, in my opinion, is a huge step-up in the overall musical quality from the year before, having realised this when I originally planned to only do a Top 5 due to the lack of songs I liked for '93, yet more songs began to grow on me, and I changed my mind. This year certainly gave birth to some classic entries, some of which are fondly remembered by the Eurovision community. History was made this year too, for a variety of different reasons: 1) The poignant debuts of Slovenia, Croatia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina were all warmly received by the audience, as all three countries took part for the first time that year, with the Croatians and Bosnians fighting the ongoing Yugoslav Wars at the time. Slovenia had actually left the Yugoslav Wars back in 1991 after just 10 days of fighting, as they were essentially left alone to become an independent nation from Yugoslavia (see 'Ten Day War' for more info). 2) Both the Croatian and Bosnian entrants sung of the ongoing wars, with the Bosnian group having to dodge sniper fire just to reach the plane to Millstreet. Warm applause rang through the arena when the Bosnian jury stationed in besieged Sarajevo gave their votes on a whistling phone line. 3) A relegation system was put into place this year for the first time, with the countries in the bottom seven positions being forced to sit out the 1994 contest, in order to make way for countries intending to take part for the first time. Cyprus were originally relegated, but with Italy (who weren't relegated) deciding to withdraw for 1994, the Cypriots were allowed to take their place, due to being the highest ranking relegated nation. 4) Despite the fact I don't have a favourable opinion of their entry, the host country certainly made their own piece of history, winning twice in a row, ensuring that they would bring the contest back 'home' for 1994. As always, enjoy the ranking! :) Me Twitter: twitter.com/ACF_HD
