A slight diversion from Goldenpond in this video. Invoking my inner La Monte Young, I came up with this basic but monstrous drone in hardware. I got playing with a CD40106B Hex Inverter chip (https://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/cd4...) on the Braedboard of the AE Modular. Using a couple of capacitors and a couple of offboard potentiometers I made two simple oscillators. I then mixed and attenuated their outputs on the XMIX, fed the signal into the SV Filter. And then into the Delay (LOFI) (which is really a PT2399 ) Anyway that made a nice 2 note chord drone. With some movement by modulating the filter. I had just unpacked my Moshang Groovesizer - an old Arduino-based synth /sequencer you may have seen here : • Non Travelling Instruments - Moshang Groov... - after my recent move. You can see it on the left of the video frame. It wasn't 100% working. But I managed to power the Arduino directly via USB, and then send its output also into the AE Modular. This gave me a basic rhythmic loop. Finally I set up a simple repeating melody on the Volca Keys. I bought this second-hand on EBay a few months ago at a pretty reasonable £70 quid or thereabouts. I don't really get on with the Volca sequencers so I'm not getting deeply into that way of working. But they're good value and I'm happy to have the 3 I now have - Modular, Drum and Keys. I probably won't be getting any more though. Anyway, this is the first time I've used the Keys on a YouTube video and I think it acquits itself pretty well here. I'm a big La Monte Young fan. A few years ago I listened to this obsessively for weeks. So good! : • Theatre of Eternal Music – The Fire Is A M... In other news, I made a long rambling third video in the Goldenpond series. About using Goldenpond as a library from Python code. I then threw that video away because it was WAAAAY too long, confusing and boring for the amount of useful information it contained. And I sat down to write a proper script. To get the ideas straight in my mind before recording it again. And in doing so, I found that there was some really stupid stuff in the current version of the library. And so I decided I have to get the API a bit saner before its worth talking about. So that's where we are with Goldendpond. I'm going to be rewriting part of the library this week. Hopefully I'll have the new version on PyPI soon. And then it will be worth making the video that explains how to use it programatically. Finally, I'm experimenting setting up a Patreon account. Not because I have a lot of subscribers or expect a lot of patrons. But because I wanted to make a fairly definitive "storefront" for some of the things I produce related to music, to my software (including Goldenpond), and to this channel. Stuff that doesn't work on Bandcamp. I also realize that I would give more regular and more informative updates about all the projects I'm working on, if I could do some of it in different formats. Video is pretty good for music and technology. But it's still quite time-consuming to edit. And there's a backlog of work I've done but not told you about, simply because I haven't managed to get a decent video together about it. Some of that could have been done just as well in writing or with audio or code examples, as a video. I could have tried putting it all on a new or existing blog, but maybe being part of an established social ecosystem like Patreon will work better. So ... here it is : / gilbertlisterresearch
