Shortcuts & UFO Safehouses 2025-05-14 - This ride journal features a few more local shortcuts and explores further North through a childhood neighborhood off Schuman. First shortcut documented is from Elkton to the Adams Jr. High grounds, then almost immediately through another shortcut to the Westland Full Gospel Temple grounds; I ride through the parking lot, where they are packing-up the recent rummage sale, then ride across the street to the earliest church I grew up in, Palmer Rd. Baptist Church; I encounter several deer there and reminisce about the South-flowing creek just off the West side of the parking lot that became the setting of many intense and symbolic dreams throughout my life. From there, I take another shortcut from the PRBC property to Harvard Street, getting to Schuman. I pedal North on Schuman, towards the old neighborhood I grew up in on Somerset; I duck through the Hamilton Elementary grounds, recalling that when I was a kid, it was this mysterious "other" school, since I was enrolled in Tinkham near our house. I proceed past Unicorn to Carly - the former site of another "Short-Cut," the mysterious "UFO Landing Pad" ... a street left oddly undeveloped for many years for reasons I have never been able to uncover. But yes, a shortcut between Earth and Outer Space; The "UFOLP" area was recently developed into new houses, but the swampy marsh-land area there remains, I assume to satisfy environmental protection regulations; I speculate that the standing water probably breeds pesky mosquitos. From there, I cross Schuman to explore what I call the "UFO Safehouse" where intergalactic passengers would gather pre-abduction or after disembarking at the Carly portal. Sadly, the unique house is falling victim to vandalism, gross graffiti, and is falling deeper into disrepair. I guess nobody is willing to invest in this cool little place; Eventually I assume it'll be torn down, and the last memories of the UFO Landing Pad and Safe House will vanish down the memory-hole.
