We have to do another heartfelt tribute - this Monday a great drummer passed, Ralph Peterson Jr, an heir to the legacy of Art Blakey. He sounded and even looked like Art in his younger days, but definitely came into something of his own later that was his own and no one else’s. I met him through my Louisvillian friend saxophonist Don Braden, for a Harvard University show where Don arranged Peterson’s incredible composition “The Art of War” for big band. That is one of Ralph’s signature tunes from the album of the same name, and the rehearsal for that event is captured in one the shots here, including Don and pianist Vijay Iyer, another special guest at the show. Even in our brief exchange there was a generosity and spirit of Ralph's that was both uplifting and infectious, and I’m very sorry not to have taken steps to reach out further to him afterwards. He was well loved in the jazz community, and please check out the Video Jazz Guy's tribute to him from their recent chats. • R.I.P. Ralph Peterson May 20, 1962 - Marc... • Ralph Peterson - Powerhouse Percussionist ... Then when you get to his own original compositions - like today’s example, the contemplative slow latinesque waltz 'Inner Sanctum' - woah, they are superbly refined and extremely introspective, in a way that is very unusual even for most jazz composers. The title “Inner Sanctum”, certainly reflects an intense inner focus of the tune that must have been part of his world, even on par with the external drive and buoyant explosiveness of his playing. Let's not forget him. Please use this brief improv as a springboard to check out his music elsewhere, and be fed and inspired by his example. ADDENDUM: Memorial services for Ralph are scheduled this coming weekend, near his home in the Darmouth MA area.
