PATREON: www.patreon.com/exploreoregon Ladd's Addition, a charming and quiet neighborhood in the southeast part of Portland, Oregon is a place unlike any other. It was primarily created by the man who obtained the land in 1877, prominent early Portlander William S. Ladd, who wanted to convert it into an exclusively residential development. With an alley for each street and half the streets running diagonal with five parks in various places, the idea for his addition was unique and drew some criticism at first. While the addition would be officially platted in 1891, Ladd himself would die in 1893, long before he could see the success of this development. It would not be until the latter part of the first decade of the 20th Century before development here began to take off. Primarily through two booming periods of development this one time stretch of farmland was converted into the neighborhood we still see today. This is the story of Ladd's Addition, with a focus on its early years and how it developed into a complete residential neighborhood from its origins, through its struggles, and ultimately to its success story.
