We had the CIF San Diego Section Open Division Championship as the Carlsbad Lancers and Cathedral Catholic Dons — the two best teams in San Diego this year — went toe-to-toe in a heavyweight showdown!!! Both squads came into this one battle-tested, disciplined, and evenly matched. They both run the rock with authority and play elite-level defense, so everybody knew this was gonna be a smashmouth, down-to-the-wire fight. Cathedral Catholic leaned on their superstar, five-star ATH Honor Fa’alave, who came in poised for another monster night to show once again why he’s one of the best players in the entire country. On the other sideline, Carlsbad’s dynamic duo of Travis Jeffery and Darian Webb were ready to keep their unstoppable one-two punch rolling and lead the Lancers offense. From the jump, both defenses came out swinging — hitting hard, making plays, and forcing each offense to earn every inch. But the Lancers found their rhythm first and took the early lead by being steady, controlled, and efficient with the ball. Cathedral Catholic made plenty of mistakes throughout the night, but the Dons never stopped fighting. They stayed in it, kept battling, and leaned on their defense to keep the game within reach. In the end, that Dons defense came up huge. They made the key stops they needed late and gave their offense one final chance to win it all on the last drive with under a minute to play.
