Motherhood is almost always presented as a miracle — a source of unconditional love and ultimate fulfillment. But cinema in recent years has begun to question this myth. In this video essay, I explore how contemporary films portray the darker, more complex side of motherhood — exhaustion, anxiety, rage, grief, and the loss of self. Focusing primarily on Die, My Love and If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, I examine why 2025 has been widely described as the year of “mothers on the edge” in cinema, and what this trend reveals about how women’s experiences are finally being represented on screen. I also discuss other notable titles, including Hamnet, One Battle After Another, The Testament of Ann Lee, and the series All Her Fault, situating them within a broader cultural and awards-season context.
