This is a special recording: for 19 years Argerich didn't play any solo repertoire at a major American concert venue. In 2000, when this concert was announced, the tickets were sold out really fast. She played first half solo and then was joined by her friend Nelson Freire and the Juilliard String Quartet. Argerich had been treated for melanoma, cancer of the skin, at the John Wayne Cancer Institute in Santa Monica, Calif. ''I was afraid of my own body,'' she said of the trauma she faced. ''I was afraid of myself for the first time; afraid to be me.'' The treatments was successful and out of gratitude, this concert was to benefit the institute. The first part of the program included the Bach C minor Partita; two Chopin numbers: this Barcarolle and the Scherzo in C-sharp minor; and the clangorous Prokofiev Sonata in B-flat. "Carnegie Hall may not have offered anything quite like this since Vladimir Horowitz returned to the recital stage in 1965 after a dozen years of retirement.", wrote James R. Oestreich, music critic of the New York times. The audience was wild. Let me know how you like this recording, leave a comment! :)
