In 2012 the tea party was still raging, the economy hadn't recovered and Obama had lost most of his 2008 Hope and Change shine. He seemed beatable but lucky for him the Republicans nominated Willard Mitt Romney a guy who made millions outsourcing jobs at Bain Capital. Romney was the definition of out of touch. He was rich, Mormon, and without any core policy principles. He went from supporting choice, gay rights, and enacting an Obamacare style healthcare plan as governor of Massachusetts to running on the opposite of all those things. He was the last "normal" republican before donald trump but he still wanted to "self" deport immigrants and reduce government spending. He famously said that 47% of americans will vote for Obama because they are dependent on government. Ultimately he was just racist but in a subtle classic republican way.
