In 301 AD, the Roman Empire attempted something extraordinary: it tried to control inflation by fixing the price of hundreds of goods across the empire. Under Emperor Diocletian, the famous Edict on Maximum Prices established legal price limits for food, labor, transport, animals, clothing, and everyday commodities. The goal was simple — stop runaway inflation and stabilize the Roman economy. But what did this law actually mean for the people who lived under it? In this documentary, we explore the Roman economy through the lives of three real individuals recorded in historical sources: • Theodorus, a tenant farmer struggling to support his family • Aurelius Flavinus, a Roman soldier benefiting from military pay and provisions • Tatianus, a wealthy aristocrat managing vast estates and civic duties By comparing their daily expenses, food, clothing, wages, and responsibilities, we can see how economic policies affected different levels of Roman society. The Edict on Maximum Prices may not have solved Rome’s inflation crisis — but it left behind one of the most detailed economic records of the ancient world. Through it, we can reconstruct what life actually cost in Ancient Rome. #romanempire #ancientrome #romanhistory #economichistory #historydocumentary
