Diving the MV Karwela is one of those experiences that stays with you long after you surface. As you descend, her shape slowly appears through the blue, a passenger ferry resting upright and intact on the sandy seabed at about 40 metres. Despite the years underwater, her elegant lines remain, her decks still clear and inviting. The wreck feels open and easy to explore. Broad cut-outs along the sides let sunlight stream in, lighting wide corridors and open rooms. With three levels to wander, it’s easy to forget the clock as you move from deck to deck. Then comes the staircase — the wreck’s showpiece. Tucked near the centre, it’s one of the most photographed sights in Maltese waters. Beams of sunlight pour through portholes, casting a soft glow that turns the metal steps into something almost sacred. The Karwela isn’t just a wreck. It’s an underwater time capsule, calm, alive, and endlessly captivating.
