They named their website foodiebay.com. Their website started becoming popular and they felt that there was a big opportunity in the restauant search business. They wanted to expand beyond their website and the founders decided to make an app. They also felt the need to change their old name foodiebay due to 2 reasons. 1.They wanted a new brand name that would give them the freedom to explore other business verticals in the future. 2. Since they had the ambition to scale up globally they wanted to avoid any confuison with the brand ebay. As their name Foodiebay sounded similar to e bay. The online shopping platform. Hence they started brainstorming for a new name. The name Zomato came up during a brainstorming session. Everyone seemed to love it. It sounded like ‘tomato’ but with a zing. In short, it was catchy, unusual and had a nice ring to it. It was also easy to remember and recall. Hence, the name Zomato was finalized. After getting a new name the founders focused on expanding their business. 10 years from then, Zomato is one of the most promisisng start ups in India. It has entered the food delivery business and is a dominat player in it. Today it is valued at more than $3 billion and cleary has a very bright future.
