U.S. Air Force Hurricane Hunters operate the WC-130J Super Hercules is a modified version of the Lockheed Martin C-130J transport aircraft, specifically configured for weather reconnaissance missions by the U.S. Air Force Reserve Command's 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, known as the Hurricane Hunters, based at Keesler Air Force Base, Mississippi. As a high-wing, medium-range aircraft, it penetrates tropical cyclones, hurricanes, and winter storms at altitudes ranging from 500 to 10,000 feet above the ocean surface, collecting high-density, high-accuracy data on storm movement, size, intensity, pressure, temperature, humidity, dew point, wind speed, and direction to improve forecasting accuracy by up to 30 percent; this data is relayed in real-time to the National Hurricane Center via satellite. Key capabilities include an endurance of nearly 18 hours at an optimum cruise speed exceeding 300 mph, covering up to 3,500 miles per mission, with palletized instrumentation such as the GPS Dropsonde Wind-finding System for deploying cylindrical sondes that measure vertical atmospheric profiles during descent, the Stepped-Frequency Microwave Radiometer for continuous surface wind and rainfall rate measurements, and additional sensors for turbulence, icing, visibility, cloud types, and ocean surface winds. Powered by four Rolls-Royce AE 2100D3 turboprop engines each producing over 4,700 horsepower, the WC-130J has a wingspan of 132 feet 6 inches, length of 99 feet 4 inches, height of 38 feet 6 inches, maximum takeoff weight of 155,000 pounds, speed of 417 mph at 22,000 feet, range of 1,841 miles with payload, and service ceiling of 28,000 feet; it operates with a minimal crew of five—pilot, co-pilot, navigator, aerial reconnaissance weather officer, and weather reconnaissance loadmaster/dropsonde operator—and includes external 1,400-gallon fuel tanks plus an internal 1,800-gallon tank for extended operations. Evolving from earlier WC-130 models introduced in 1959, the J variant replaced the H model and became operational in the 2000s, serving exclusively in the Atlantic, Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico, and Pacific regions for hurricane and tropical cyclone forecasting. #WC130J #HurricaneHunters #WeatherReconnaissance #USAF #MilitaryAviation #C130J #StormTracking #Aviation #FYP #AvGeek #PlaneSpotting #hurricanemelissa #hurricanemilton #stormchasing #c120 #airforce #usairforce
