About 1100 Nm west of Hawaii lies a small island in the Pacific Ocean, during WWII USN NAS Midway was located on the atoll during the famous Battle of Midway in 1942. During the war the Douglas SBD Dauntless, Grumman F4F Wildcat, B17 bombers, Liberators, Brewster F2A Buffalo and the Catalinas flew there. The Douglas SBD Dauntless is a dive bomber that was mainly used by the American Navy and Marine Corps during the Second World War. Many successes were achieved with the aircraft in the Pacific Ocean. Especially during and after the Battle of Midway the Dauntless made a great contribution to stopping the Japanese advance. The Grumman F4F Wildcat was a successful fighter aircraft of the United States Navy and United States Marine Corps at the beginning of the battle in the Pacific Ocean, during the Second World War. The Wildcat replaced the aging Brewster F2A Buffalo on all carriers in 1941. Grumman was the manufacturer. I flew there in the Beechcraft Baron to have a look around. Even saw two whales jumping near the coast.
