The Reconciliation (2006) is a short documentary which captures the extraordinary meeting between Commander Bill King, former Royal Navy submarine commander and Akira Tsurukame, son of a Japanese submarine officer killed in 1944 when King’s HMS Telemachus torpedoed I-166. In 2003, Akira began searching for answers about his father, an officer in the Imperial Japanese Navy. His journey took him from Japan to the Netherlands and finally, unexpectedly, to Ireland. In spring 2004, he learned that the commander of the submarine responsible for his father’s death was still alive at 94 and living at Oranmore Castle, County Galway. With the support of Bill’s daughter, Leonie Finn, Akira travelled to meet him. The film follows this powerful encounter and explores how their families — and the next generations — confronted the legacy of war. It also tells of Akira’s visit to the Netherlands, where he honoured the Dutch sailors lost to his father’s submarine, and his meeting with relatives of those victims. The documentary culminates in a deeply moving act of peace and remembrance: the planting of a tree at Oranmore Castle by the three families together. Directed by Tom Flanagan Sr., edited by Tom Flanagan Jr.
