Chiari I Malformation video

Hi. My name is Jennifer, and I am a 52-year-old female from Houston, Texas, who was recently diagnosed with Chiari I Malformation. Chiari malformation is a structural defect that occurs when the cerebellum (the part of the brain that controls coordination and muscle movement) pushes through the foramen magnum (the hole at the bottom of the skull). This puts pressure on parts of the brain and spinal cord and can cause mild to severe symptoms. My symptoms actually began over a year ago, but without enough consistency to send me to a doctor. My original symptom was cough-induced headaches that started (contrary to how most people describe Chiari headaches at the base of the skull) at the top of my head, radiating down to my teeth and lasting up to 20 or more seconds. My next symptom was a cough that often woke me from my sleep. I would go to sleep in my recliner as I often did when I had bronchitis-related coughs. At first, my husband and I thought the coughing might be allergy-related, but that was not the case. My next symptom occurred around November of 2023. It followed a period of head congestion, and I felt pressure in my head on the left side. My hearing was muffled. At first, I thought there might be some impacted ear wax, but I wasn't able to flush anything out. By January of this year, the pressure had built up, and I went to see a physician. She confirmed that there was no wax buildup, and I had no signs of infection. Two weeks later, I went to see an ENT doctor, who had my hearing tested. My ear drums were functioning fine. He theorized that I might be experiencing Eustachian tube dysfunction (which normally works itself out but had not to that point), but, in case there was something else going on, he prescribed a steroid pack and for me to take Flonase with an antihistamine. A month later, I returned to the ENT doctor. The prescribed course of action had had no effect, and the pressure had gotten worse. I asked for imaging, and he ordered an MRI and referred me to neurology. When I received the MRI results, I started researching the terms in the MRI. I came across Chiari malformation, which results showed as a congenital defect that often went undetected or didn't present until adulthood. On April 2, a neurologist confirmed that I had Arnold Chiari, or Chiari malformation type I. This is a mechanical condition that requires a mechanical condition (surgery) to fix. The neurologist ordered a second MRI and referred me to a neurosurgeon. The second MRI revealed a syringomyelia, or syrinx, which is a fluid-filled cyst in the spinal cord. The most common site for a syrinx can grow larger over time and damage the spinal cord. The most common site for a syrinx is the cervical spine or neck region. As the syrinx grows, it presses on the spinal cord and interferes with the transmission of nerve impulses. I started to notice difficulty with balance, especially when walking. On May 8, I met with a neurosurgeon, who informed me that I was a candidate for posterior fossa decompression surgery. https://mayfieldclinic.com/pe-chiari-... The next day, the neurosurgeon's nurse practitioner called me to inform me that he didn't have any openings on his schedule until mid-July. This procedure has a recovery period of four to six weeks, and, as an educator, I need to be able to report back to work on August 1. I agreed to be referred to this neurosurgeon's colleague, and a video visit was scheduled for the following week. Before I was to meet with the new neurosurgeon, I developed hypertension, for which I don't have a prior history. I also began ti experience vertigo. I met with the new neurosurgeon, and he went over the r]procedure and risks, and we agreed to proceed with the surgery. So, here we are. Surgery is scheduled for June 11, 2024. If you have been diagnosed with Chiari I malformation in the past or recently, I made this so you would know you are not alone. I look forward to your comments and to your walking this journey with me vicariously! If you have questions, ASK THEM. #Chairi #Chairimalformation #syringomyelia #syrinx #posteriorfossadecompression
